Foodie Friday: Hot New Music and Recipe with Mags Duval
Good Afternoon Mags!! What was a typical dinner or family meal like for you growing up?
My mom’s go-to dinner consisted of barbecue chicken, sweet potatoes and green beans. Often times, we ordered takeout from our favorite Thai restaurant down the street. I came from a big family- so it was an ordeal to cook for all of us!
Being a Tennessean, where are some of your favorite places to get southern classics?
There’s this mother/daughter owned restaurant called “Barbara’s Home Cookin’” that’s a little ways out of Nashville. It’s your classic “meat-and-three” southern food. Sinfully good.
What is your favorite music to listen to while you cook?
I usually put on some sort of atmospheric Spotify playlist. There’s one I think called “Evening Chill” I listen to frequently while cooking.
After playing a late show, what is your guilty pleasure food?
Well, I am currently trying out the vegetarian thing, but there is this late-night dive diner in Nashville called “Dino’s” and I swear their burger is sent from heaven above.

@magsduvalmusic Had to document because this was the best donut I’ve ever had😍 #fonuts #lacma #hollywood #intelligencia #glutenfree #vegan #LAAF

What’s a typical day like for you (food-wise) when you’re at home and how is that different from when you are on tour?
I generally try to eat healthy because that’s when I feel the best and have the most energy. I usually wake up and make eggs or oatmeal, eat kale salad for lunch or have a larabar and green juice if I’m in the studio, then for dinner I’ll make a salad with salmon or some sort of protein. Being on the road is interesting food-wise haha I definitely end up getting tired of gas station bananas and string cheese.
Tell us about one memorable meal you’ve had during your travels. What did it involve?
I went to Africa with my family once and we ate crocodile. It was actually really good!
Is there anywhere you like to eat in Nashville?
Ugh, yes. Everywhere! There are so many lovely local restaurants and with the city growing like it is, new ones are opening all the time. I just went to brunch at this farm-to-table restaurant called “The Old School” last weekend. Everything was fresh from local vendors, it was amazing.
If you could pick one food to eat every day for the rest of your life, what would that be?
Green curry. I love Thai food so much.
Is there anything that you don’t enjoy eating?
I hate raw onions, I literally cannot understand why they are in everything. I know so many people that can’t stand them.
Where do yo get your recipes? Any favorite cookbooks?
I honestly get most of my recipes from my mom, my grandma or online! I would love to invest in more cookbooks, but I usually google recipes when I’m in the grocery store haha
Could you give us a secret killer recipe?
Yes! I am actually pretty known for my banana bread. Baking is a side-passion of mine so I frequently will bake something to bring into sessions for my co-writers.
Four ripe bananas (mashed)
Add 3/4 cup of sugar
5 tbsp. of butter
One large egg
1 1/2 cups of flour
1 tsp. baking soda
3/4 bag of Ghirardelli milk chocolate chips
chopped walnuts
Bake at 350 for 1 hour
Your hot new single “Cinnamon Gum” relishes in being hung up on the wrong someone. Have you had any dinner date disasters?
Oh my goodness, yes! I was on the outs with a guy I had been dating for a while and on Valentine’s Day, we had a super awkward dinner. He hated Vday, so as a joke I bought him a giant teddy bear and heart-shaped chocolates. When he took me home that night, he left the bear outside my door. We didn’t last much longer after that.
What has been your most memorable career moment of the year been so far and what do you have in store for the rest of 2017?
I got to perform my new music for the first time at a Mary Kay conference in New Orleans for 20,000 people. It was such an amazing experience. I’m set to release songs every 8-10 weeks and hope to tour later this year!
Finally for Battered and Brewed, If you could eat or drink with anyone, who would it be and what would you have?
This is an amazing question! I think I would want to have cappuccinos and macarons with Audrey Hepburn.

Mags Duval is a study in the magic only contradictions can make. She’s a could-be poet laureate who writes club bangers. She lives distinctly in the moment but is also a welcome throwback to vintage Hollywood glamour, a mix of beguiling sweetness, risky edge, and class. Co-produced by Grammy winner Luke Laird (Kacey Musgraves, Carrie Underwood, Blake Shelton, Little Big Town, Eric Church, Tim McGraw) and John Hill (Eminem, Shakira, Snoop Lion, Pink, Christina Aguilera, Wu-Tang Clan, Jay Z), Mags’ anticipated new songs including “Plain Jane,” “Cinnamon Gum,” and “Stay Lonely” defy easy categorization: smart storytelling layered over hooks that nod to 90s hip hop and iconic 50’s girl-group harmonies.
