“Wine or Whiskey” and all Things Food With Natalie Stovall

Good Afternoon Natalie! Thank you so much for talking with Battered and Brewed! What was a typical dinner or family meal like for you growing up?

Mamma ALWAYS made sure to have something green on the plate. I didn’t even realize how complete our meals always were until I left home. She had a meat, something green, some kind of starch, and for sure dessert. 🙂

Who’s the cook in the family you or James?

James, for sure. I love to cook and especially to bake. But James is the head chef in our household. He’s always creating something new and combining ideas from recipes he reads online.

Do you have a go to cooking or dinner party playlist?

I have quite a few. When I’m cooking, I love to listen to new records or podcasts. I discover a lot of new music that way.

Favorite food to cook with that comes in a can?

Black Beans! I love black beans and I guess I’ve never used them from anything other than in a can?

@nataliestovall When you haven’t had dairy or grain in 2 months, you put your hair in a #partypony and throw yourself a pizza party. #jets #hawaiian #deepdish

What’s a typical day like for you (food-wise) when you’re at home and how is that different from when you are on tour?

I LOVE making over-easy eggs, spinach, avocado, and bacon when I am home. That’s usually my lunch meal if I am home cause I don’t really eat breakfast. We typically have a bowl of hard boiled eggs in the fridge for snacks along with fruit. But, I love breakfast for any meal. And then James and I always just create dinner that evening with whatever makes sense. We love getting those Costco rotisserie chickens (that we call churkey’s because they are so big they are between chicken and turkey size!) breaking them down and then using the chicken for all kinds of meals.

When we’re on the road, we do a LOT of Subway, but when we have time we love Chipotle, Jason’s Deli, the salad bar at Ruby Tuesday’s, Starbucks, and one of my favorite places ever is SHEETZ. I freakin LOVE the made to order kitchen there. And WaWa, too. They may be gas stations, but they are both NEXT level gas stations!

What are your top three US cities for food?

Boston – I went to college there and OH MY the North End with all the Italian places.
Chicago
New York City

After playing a late show, what is your guilty pleasure food?

Usually my leftovers from dinner! HAHA! I ALWAYS have a box of left overs (and I get made fun of incessantly for it) but after the show, I have a whole second meal! And when we are in the area – Sheetz is our after show go-to.

What was your favorite cereal to eat as a kid?

Cocoa Krispies!

Is there anything that you don’t enjoy eating?

PICKLES. I HATE PICKLES. And people love to put pickles on plates and sandwiches, but then the juice soaks into everything else and makes the whole plate taste like pickles. Ew.

My favorite healthy snack for traveling is? Bananas.

So we have to ask is it “Wine or Whiskey” for you?

BOTH!!! It just depends on the night 🙂

Can you give us a little insight to that song?

It’s a song about that moment right before your life is about to change, but you don’t know if it’s gonna change for the better or break your heart. That moment happens to us all so many times in our lives – relationships, careers, health… and this song explores that moment in a way that hits me down to my core.

What pushed you to try out for The Voice?

It was an instinct. I have been contacted many times about auditioning and it never felt like the right time, but for some reason this time it felt like the right thing to do! I’m so thankful for the opportunities it has already brought me!

You had Blake turn around for you in your blind audition. Did you have an idea of who you wanted to go with ahead of time?

I wanted Blake the whole time! I was so happy when his chair turned because then I didn’t have to make a hard decision!

Do you feel like, no matter what happens, The Voice has positively impacted your career?

Absolutely! The response from fans and supporters for going on the show has overwhelmed me! It’s so funny because I knew the show would reach a lot of new fans, but the part that has humbled and excited me the most is the way my already existing fans rallied around me for doing the show! It has continued to encourage and lift me up in ways that I never expected.

What can fans expect from you in 2018?

More music and touring!

Finally for Battered and Brewed, If you could eat or have a drink with one person dead or alive, who would it be and what would you have?

Queen Elizabeth I And I would ask her to pour her favorite wine from her reign in the 1500’s. I would LOVE to know if it tastes different from the nicest wines of today. I’m so fascinated by her and have SO many questions. Gah, that would be epic.
