Music in the Kitchen: Interview with Grammy Album Winner Jason Crabb on Family and His New Cookbook

Good Afternoon Jason! Thank you so much for taking a break from your busy schedule writing a cookbook and working on a new album to talk with Battered and Brewed! So what was a typical dinner or family meal like for you growing up in Beaver Dam, Kentucky?

A normal meal at the house was fried pork-chops, mashed potatoes, corn on the cob, and canned biscuits, they’re my favorite!

What are some of the family recipes you grew up with?

We didn’t grow up with a lot, so a lot of it was out of the box like Stove Top Stuffing, Chicken flavored savory egg noodles, things like that.

@jasoncrabbmusic Yuuuuummmmm!! It’s National Hamburger Day! What do you put on your burger!?

Was there ever music playing in the kitchen growing up?

There was ALWAYS music playing – everywhere! We grew up listening to Alabama, The Judds, the Hemphills, the Hinsons, the Spencers, George Jones, Keith Whitley…we loved music!

@jasoncrabbmusic This looks like a good place to grab something to eat before the @opry !!! #opry #grandoleopry YUM YUM Cafe Lula!!

We hear you and your wife Shellye are planning on releasing a cookbook soon. Tell us a little bit about that.

We’re really excited! Shellye’s gathering up a lot of recipes and we’re getting it ready. There’s going to be some recipes from my childhood and then some recipes that friends and family have contributed, it’s gonna be fun!!!

What’s your favorite recipe that you could not wait to include in the cook book?

My famous Jason Crabb Deep-Fried Turkey!

Who cooks more in your family?

Shellye cooks the most. I try but….HA!

Which four things are always in your home refrigerator?

Eggs, butter (Land-O-Lakes is the best!), Cheese, Coca-Cola

What food is your food vice? You know, one you sneak in a little extra of when no one is looking.

I REALLY REALLY REALLY LOVE SHELLYE’S FRIED POTATOES!!!!

How does food play a part when touring or being in new places?

It’s so fun to travel to different parts of the country. We love seasonal food.

Whats the most memorable meal you have had being on tour?

Probably eating in the Cayman Islands

@jasoncrabbmusic Thank you Cayman Islands!!!

Aside from your passion for food and music, what’s the one thing that really keeps you ticking?

My family! I LOVE to spend time with my girls! My wife Shellye, and my daughters, Ashleigh and Emma, are the best thing God’s ever given me!!

@jasoncrabbmusic Love this picture of my family!

“Whatever the Road” was released in late 2015 but is currently on the Billboard “Top Christian Album Charts.” What has it been like touring for this album?

It’s been great! You know, every time I start to record, I pray that God would give the right songs to speak to people and to encourage them, and it inspires me to see God touch their lives.

Of course we want to know, do you have any new music coming out soon?

We are just starting to write for a new project coming very soon!

Finally for Battered and Brewed, If you could eat or drink with anyone, who would it be and what would you have?

You know what, we are so busy, I’d love to just have 4-5 days alone with my wife Shellye – whatever we eat during that time is just icing on the cake so to speak…I just love time with my family!!!
