Good Afternoon Lenny! Thank you so much for talking with Battered and Brewed!
What is it like living in Columbia, SC?
I love it! My family and I live on Lake Murray. It’s great to go out on the boat. I love to fish.
Who got you interested in cooking?
My dad was an experimenter when it came to cooking on the grill or the gas cooker. Watching him come up with things to cook got me hooked on cooking.
Southerners know good cooking. What is your favorite comfort food?
Honestly, I am a pizza lover. There’s nothing like a good pizza and coke. My wife makes a really great home-made pizza.
What should every Southern kitchen be stocked with?
Deer meat! I’ve killed 2 deer so far this season. There is so much you can do with deer meat like deer burgers, deer spaghetti, deer stew, deer cheese dip, deer meatloaf, and the list goes on!
Do you have a favorite recipe to cook for your family?
My wife and kids love it when I cook meatloaf. They say it’s the best!
What is your favorite music to listen to while you cook?
If I am in the house cooking I really don’t listen to music. But when I’m grilling I like to listen to Pandora. I usually play the Conway Twitty station and drink a beer while cooking. There isn’t anything better.
I know you like the outdoors, how about a bonfire drinking playlist?
Pandora is the best! It can be country one minute, rock the next minute, or rap. I like to listen to it all when it comes to chillin’ at a bonfire.
What about a funny kitchen incident?
I was cooking one night and my youngest daughter Cora, who had just turned one, was running around the kitchen with a plastic bowl on her head yelling and collided with the fridge. No one got hurt but it was a funny moment.
Do you ever experiment in your cooking and eating?
Yes, and it’s never turned out bad! My wife loves to whip up random things. I usually know when it’s random too! I always ask “this is good, what is it?” She always replies, “I don’t know, I just came up with it.” LOL
What’s one food everyone tells you to try, but you just can’t get up the nerve?
Oysters and clams. There’s just something about them.
How does food play a part when touring or being in new places?
I love to watch “Diner’s, Drive-ins, and Dives.” If I am touring in that area, I like to visit the restaurants.
Most memorable meal while touring. Where were you and what did it involve?
In Texas we play at River Run Off -Road Park. There is a vendor there that makes the best ribeye steak sandwich.
What do you do on your day off?
I hang-out with my wife and daughters. We like to go out on the lake, find an island, grill-out, and swim. We also like to take our Side by Side, or Slide by Slide as my daughter calls it, and go ride at the off- road parks around our house. Sometimes we have big shindigs at the house and invite family and friends over and have a good time.
If you could pick one food to eat every day for the rest of your life, what would that be?
Hands down, pizza!
After playing a late show, what is your guilty pleasure food?
Your fourth studio album, Dirtified, is coming out October 28, 2016. Tell us how this album came about?
I was cutting a song at Phivestar Productions, working on new material, and we did the song called “Dirtified.” After cutting the song, DJ KO said that it should be the album. The title fit so well with my lifestyle. When it comes to mud-bogs and mud, I am definitely certified.
In your song “Keep it So Country” you talk about keeping the beer ice cold and sipping moonshine. How do you keep it country?
By doing what my song says; I live my life by my songs, that’s how I keep my music moving. I write about the stuff I do or what I’ve been through. Keeping it country is telling the truth. I own a nonprofit organization called “Mud Digger Mafia” and in my verse I say, “With the MDM, yeah that’s my crew, giving back to people, that’s what we do.” That’s how I keep it country.
Finally for Battered and Brewed, if you could have a drink with anyone, who would it be and what would you drink?
I lost my dad at young age. I would do anything to be able to have a drink with him. It would be a shot of Jim Beam and a Budweiser.
