Thank you for chatting with Battered and Brewed. Let’s start by just hearing a little about who you are. How would you best describe yourself as a musician?
I would describe myself first as a businessman. I love the art of business within the entertainment world. As a musician, I love how I get to interact with fans and bring a certain amount of joy into their lives as they do into mine.
When it comes to your career in music, “Wake Up Call,” is your newest single. Did you have a specific inspiration that led to the writing of this song?
I can’t take credit for writing this song. It was pitched to me by my good friend Kenneth Duncan who wrote the song with Lainey Edwards and Blake Bollinger. The song really spoke to me about those feelings that you get when you wake up next to the person that you really care about. In this case, it was my fiancé Kirstie Lane who I also asked to sing on the track with me. I wrote the tagline at the end of the song specifically for her to sing.
How long have you been writing songs? You have had some cuts from Meghan Linsey and Newsboys. Can you talk a little about what it meant to you as a writer, to have artists of their caliber believe in the music that you wrote so much that they would record it?
I have been writing songs professionally for the past 6 years, but I started writing when I was 15 years old. The moment that I got to work with people like Michael Tait (from Newsboys), Desmond Child, Love and Theft, and Nolan Neal was very special to me. More importantly, I got to cultivate close friendships with them before we even started writing, and that means more to me than any cut that could come from it.
You also have a background in acting and filmmaking. How would you compare filmmaking and acting to songwriting and being an artist?
I consider film and music business to be kind of the same. It is a lot about branding and advertising. As an actor and a musician, they are a lot alike because you put your heart into the character that you play or into the song that you write or sing. All in all, whether it is on set or on stage I enjoy putting my heart out there and wearing it on my sleeve for all to see.
Are there plans for an EP featuring “Wake Up Call” or full-length album that your fans should be getting excited about?
Absolutely. The album title I Am reflects myself and is a reminder to never forget where I came from and the stories that define my journey. It will be released on all platforms including Itunes, Spotify, Pandora, and Amazon.
Now onto some food questions…
When you’re back in your hometown, what is the one go-to restaurant that you really look forward to?
When I get back home to Branson, MO I always must make a stop at Vasken’s Deli. It is a Greek-Mediterranean café owned by my dear friend, Mr. Vasken. It started out as a local’s only spot and has grown into so much more. I am always happy to walk in, still see my picture on the wall, and give my friend a hug before heading off to Silver Dollar City. Most of the time, I am a vegetarian for a better-way-of-life/health reasons, but I will always make an exception for a Vasken’s spicy hot ham and cheese.
If you could pick three foods to bring with you while stranded on a desert island, what would those foods be?
I love all types of fruit, a good PB & J, and my fiance’s amazing vegan curry.
What is your experience with cooking yourself? Do you have a signature dish with any secret recipes that you can share with us?
I have never cooked myself so I don’t have that experience. Ha! On a serious note, I have a fiancé that cooks so much better than I do, so I just let her lead and I follow.
What is one food item that you have no intention of ever trying?
There really isn’t anything that I won’t try at least once.
What is your favorite Nashville restaurant?
It is a toss-up between the vegetarian restaurant, Sunflower Café, and Jack Brown’s Beer and Burger Joint.
Finally, if you could have a meal and a drink with one person, dead or alive, who would it be and what would you have?
I would love to share a meal with Brad Pitt (with Taylor Swift at the table next to us). I would prefer for Brad to pick the restaurant and recommend the choice for the entrée. The reason I would choose Brad (over Ryan Reynolds) is because he is from Springfield, MO, (about 30 mins North of Branson) so we would find common topics of conversation.
