Foodie Friday Interview: Billy Raffoul Talks Touring, The Food He Could Never Give Up, and Making Music

What first sparked your love of music? Was there a particular record you remember?

My love of music definitely came from my parents and their love of music. My father being a rock and roll musician since before I was born and my mother, a writer/painter who also has a deep love for music.

I’m sure you won’t mind me saying that your new single “Dark Four Door” is just fantastic. Can you give us a little bit of background about song selection and writing?

Thank you so much for the kind words. The song was written in a hotel room in Los Angeles about two and a half years ago. I had just gotten off a plane from Southern Ontario. On a larger scale the song was written about the little things that remind you of someone you used to know. Things that your subconscious just won’t forget about, even if you’d like to.

You’ve also received some great praise for “Driver” from tons of music outlets. That must have felt pretty special?

To be honest, it feels great to start to just put out music. The fact that some people are enjoying it makes that much more special.

You just returned from Europe where you opened for Kings of Leon, Pixies, and Nathaniel Rateliff. Was there anyone that you really clicked with?

Europe was an unforgettable experience. From playing in the basement of a small club, to a large stage in Hyde Park, everywhere we went we felt truly welcome and that was a great feeling. It was great to watch and hang out with the Kings and Nathaniel Rateliff and his band put on an incredible show.

Who else would you love to tour with?

Arkells are a Canadian rock band from Hamilton, ON – not far from where I am from. I’ve been a fan of theirs for a while. It’d be amazing to share the stage with them.

Congratulations on playing a hometown show at The Ryman in September opening for Judah and the Lion. What makes playing the Ryman and in Nashville so great for you?

The Ryman is a special place to play. I have been spoiled and able to play this venue twice now. The crowds have been so welcoming, full of energy, and attentive even for an opening act. I remember my first time going to the Ryman.. It was to watch Damien Rice perform. I remember thinking that I couldn’t wait to play this place one day. Nearly three weeks later I stepped on that stage to open up for the legendary Jeff Beck. Again I am spoiled.. absolutely spoiled.

Which other iconic venues would you like to perform?

A bucket list venue for me would have to be Massey Hall in Toronto. Being from Canada this venue holds a special place in my heart.

If you designed your own food tour of Nashville, which restaurants/bars would be on your list of places to visit?

There are too many to list. If I had to make a list, near the top would be: The Flipside, Adele’s, The Sunflower Cafe, and Arnold’s Country Kitchen. (All over the place I know)

Southerners know good cookin’. What should every Southern kitchen be stocked with?

I don’t know the first thing about a Southern kitchen but I do know what I like to eat.. green and baked beans, mashed potatoes, creamed corn, and fried chicken.

You have been a lot of places. What’s the most memorable meal you’ve had while touring. Where were you and what did it involve?

One of my favourite meals was in Amsterdam this past summer at a place called Cafe de Klos. We got a bunch of spare ribs and baked potatoes.

Is there anywhere you have wanted to travel or a restaurant you have always wanted to dine in that you have not yet?

My grandparents are from Lebanon. I grew up eating Lebanese and Middle Eastern dishes. I would love to travel there.

One junk food you know you could never give up?

Peanut M&M’s.. 100%

What condiment do you always have in your fridge?

KETCHUP.. I don’t know if it is a Canadian thing or what.. I just love it on everything.

Finally for Battered and Brewed, If you could eat or have a drink with one person dead or alive, who would it be and what would you have?

I love Irish whiskey.. I don’t know.. maybe Bono? Having a glass of whiskey with Bono would be something.
